Always leaning on him.
How was your weekend? Our weekend had some ups and downs. It included work for the both of us, finalizing one major and important component to our birth plan, and a late night trip to the hospital. Lots of excitement for the Lances.
Let’s start with the good: Christopher and I hired a doula! As you recall, I was on the fence about hiring one but after speaking with several mommy friends who had natural births, it was apparent that we would need one especially if I was really serious about having an unmedicated birth (I am). I instantly loved her when we first met and knew I would be comfortable having her in the delivery room with us. She has a very warm, calming, happy energy about her and most importantly I trust her. The other thing we were happy about is that she’s assisted many births at Kaiser and is familiar with the hospital and staff. She’s also knowledgeable in hypnobirthing which I’ve been looking into. We feel really great about our decision and we’re so happy we found her. I feel more confident and less worried about labor & delivery now.
And now for the stressful part of our weekend. Late last night we rushed over to Labor & Delivery because Baby Boy didn’t move very much all day. Up until Sunday morning, he had been punching and kicking and rolling around constantly to the point where I wondered if the kid ever slept. And then Sunday he stopped moving except for a few random kicks here and there. I tried drinking OJ and iced water, eating some food, laying on my left side, laying on my back, playing music, talking to him, gently pressing down on my belly…I tried everything that usually yields some sort of reaction from him but yesterday I got nothing. I checked his heartbeat throughout the day which sounded fine but that wasn’t a guarantee that he was fine in there. We were concerned (ok, we were freaking out) so we went to the hospital where they checked Baby Boy’s vitals and everything was OK. His heartbeat was very strong and on the ultrasound monitor we saw that he was definitely moving and squirming but completely scrunched up. The doctor explained that I may feel his movements less now because he doesn’t have much room to move around anymore and I should count his kicks everyday and come in immediately if something feels wrong. We were so relieved but it was definitely a very stressful day.
Speaking of stress, if you follow me on Instagram I shared a little bit about a podcast episode I listened to regarding the impact stress has on fetal development and the first 7 years of a baby’s life. Which leads me to some of my recent favorite links on the web:
- Here’s the aforementioned podcast episode.
- Did you watch Lin-Manuel Miranda on SNL? His opening monologue was SO GOOD. We also loved the Stranger Things sketch. He nailed Dustin!
- We love soups, Christopher especially, so I can’t wait to try some of these recipes. Fall can’t come soon enough, am I right?
- This mom threw out all her kids’ toys and got her life back. Would you try this?
- Someone on Reddit asked for advice on how to cope with grief and this reply was beautiful.
- Did you watch the presidential debate last night (are you rolling your eyes, too?)? At least we get some hilarious tweets out of it. And, of course, who can forget Kenneth Bone?
Hope you have a wonderful Monday! xoxo
We also managed take some photos for the blog. Will share more very soon!
